Balancing screen time with non-screen-related activities, such as reading print books or magazines, is crucial, as children’s lives are increasingly submerged in the digital world. Education and thought leaders have suggested that increased time spent on digital media could be the culprit. Digital media can also eclipse reading – national reading scores have been stagnant since the late 2000s. Existing evidence has established linkages between specific media habits and obesity, insomnia, academic performance, aggression, depression, anxiety, and sexual risk-taking.
While online activities can be enormously entertaining for everyone, and provide benefits depending on the context, content, dose, and character and age of the child, research also shows that screen time can be addictive and negatively impact child health and development.
For older children, reading can help to improve writing skills, develop a broader vocabulary, better understand other cultures, and increase his or her general knowledge base. Reading, either aloud or together with you, can help your young child acquire language, develop literacy skills, stimulate imagination, and provide an opportunity for bonding. Reading has proven to be one of the most valuable forms of cognitive enrichment for children of all ages. Children will mimic their care givers, and what a better habit to mimic than reading? The best way to create the love of reading in children is to read to them daily as well as them seeing you read for pleasure.
