Meanwhile, on Channel 5 at 8pm, Jane McDonald’s tour of Africa reaches Magical Morocco, where she learns the art of haggling in the markets in Marrakesh. There’s no shortage of travelogues today, as this fun, boozy series – following hosts Aidy Smith, Helena Nicklin and a guest as they drink their way around a region known for its alcohol – returns for a third run. The second episode focuses on how Harris’s crimes finally caught up with him. Some of the first episode’s most horrifying moments come from allegations that Harris committed assaults behind the scenes while he was spearheading the 1980s Kids Can Say No! campaign against child sex abuse, and that over the course of years he groomed and repeatedly sexually assaulted a childhood friend of his daughter. Time and again here victims recall not only the trauma of Harris’s assaults but also being unable to publicly accuse him for fear of being disbelieved and further humiliated, not least because of Harris’s supposedly “harmless” avuncular persona. But it is also a perfect illustration of why, for decades, both of them were able to prey with impunity on young women and girls, secure in the knowledge that their status as household-name TV stars would protect them. Knowing what we know now about the terrible sexual crimes committed by both men, it makes for very uncomfortable viewing. A new two-part documentary about fallen national treasure Rolf Harris begins with footage of the entertainer appearing with Jimmy Savile on Jim’ll Fix It.
